Nathan Carroll has been wanting to do a trip down to mainland Mexico for a couple of years now but could never pull it together. He was watching this particular swell pretty closely and everything seemed to be lining up-solid swell with good periods, light winds, no heavy rains in the forecast. So he called up some friends (Che Stange, Anthony Petruso and Oliver Kurtz) and got everyone onboard. Everything seemed to be lining up perfectly except for the fact that we all had to be at the airport at 7am on July 5th. A full day of travelling after the biggest holiday in America - no way are we all getting on that flight together, I thought. I just made sure that I was there on time and shrugged my shoulders at the thought of everyone else not making it-I was going. Not exactly sure how we did it, but we all made it on the sold out flight thru Mexico City, 2+ hours waiting in customs and immigration lines, filling out swine flu questionnaires in Spanish and walking through heat sensors, navigating the Mexico City Airport (which should have its own zipcode), getting on our connection flight, then waiting for our ride to drive us to our final destination, all the while its 97˚ at 10pm. When we arrived at the beach the following morning the waves were pumping, never seen Anthony Petruso move so fast. The sun was breaking out, the winds were non-existent and the tide was going out. For the next two days we 4x4 to some spots and had the same routine, surf for 4-5 hours in the morning, ate lunch followed by an evening surf for 2-3 hours. It was one of those strange trips that you don't realize how good you got it until after, everything that was happening seemed euphoric. The waves were plentiful if you knew where to go and the crowds were zilch. The waves are out there, go get them.
