CHALLENGING is the most apt description of Sunday's Volcom Pipeline Pro.

Heavy swell with a touch of morning sickness greeted the first rounds (the end of 64) and a lot of boards went south.

Hawaii dominated with Danny Fuller, Kiron Jabour, Ian Walsh, Jamie O’Brien, John John Florence through to the semis. Five out of eight finalists aint bad at all.

Anthony Walsh and Mark Mathews are still alive and kicking for Australia.

But talk of the comp is Brett Barley, the USA's Outer Banks standout who has been fast making friends and fans.

12 broken boards before noon! And I watched the post-comp free surf. In 30 minutes there were about 12 more snapped boards. I went out to a different reef that was shifty. took beatings, one after another.
