Unfortunately grovel fests are a part of this industry wether you like it or not. As you probably know a LOT of wave riding "events" are held in less than desirable conditions..!? You must also know that, no matter how much planning or prep that you take, in the end mother nature decides what conditions you get...!! ----This scenario is in no way a grovel fest, it's just some solid surfers making the most of some "OK" waves. As for comments or commentary from the reporters/admin: Who wouldn't be excited about seeing some top surfers rip apart any wave (doesn't have to be 10 foot chopes). I remember being in Hossegor for the ASP quicksilver comp and the standard was more than impressive, watching slater make perfect 10's and Andy Iron's take that massive beating..... But don't get me wrong, I had the privilege of surfing with those fella's before the contest in less than desirable surf (2-3 foot onshore)... they all ripped and were getting barrels where no one else can. As for the energy drink debate, all I can say is that Ed knows my feelings about it and we can leave it at that. In the end, these guys absolutely rip energy powered or not.... PS.. I'm a sponger.
I replaced drinking red bull with drinking Bull urine.....testosterone like the streets of Pampalona....It enhances my shredding to super hero levels....!
that was terrible, however watching pro surfers skating incredibly badly makes me feel better about being a part of the rolling community. wahahahahahaha!
Chill out, it's caffeine and taurine, not nandrolone and crack that Red Bull sell. And I'd be suprised if a lot of the surfers actually drink it right before paddling out.
When you're doing a hectic cardio activity like surfing anyway, you don't really want to raise your heart rate even higher.
When I'm tired and there's work/assignments that need doing, energy drinks help me get through them. But you pay for it after, by feeling worse once all the effects wear off.
Surfing is simply following all other major professional sports, as the field becomes increasingly competitive, you have to look to the tiny individual components to improve and win. Look at why the British Cycling Team are so dominant, 'cos they have the best technology in the world.
As professional sport grows, it's the 1%'s that count. RedBull are investing in pro surfing, they want their brand to be associated with winning. Hence the performance monitoring.
For the majority of us, surfing isn't a competitive sport, and we don't make a living from it, it's something we do for fun. So all this stuff seems pretty alien. However, for a pro surfer, where the difference between making it through the heat and going onto a big paycheck or dumping out in the first round can come down to being half a metre out of position on a wave, being slightly out of position on the board so not maintaining balance, you can see why they want to nail all that stuff.
Go Red Bull. Thanks for bringing such amazing surfers to the ideas table. You guys are blowing our minds and messing with our dreamsurf sequences. ps it won't be long before groms are going to wanna surf like jordy smith and win like jordy smith.
