KELLY Slater, Jordy Smith, Mick Fanning all hit the canvas at the Billabong Rio Pro in a day of upsets and almost complete Aussie domination.

After rounds three and four the surfers guaranteed quarter-final spots were: Taj Burrow, Owen Wright, Josh Kerr and Joel Parkinson, making it Australia Day over in Rio.

Real shockers were Kelly Slater's exit at the hands of Bobby Martinez and Mick Fanning's close loss to Brazilian Raoni Monteiro. Adriano de Souza rounds out the local hope but both will need to surf their way through round five to claim a spot in the quarters.

The final day is live HERE.

Dream tour gone this year,Rio was a joke, shocking judging,Poo 2ft closeouts and a very predictable win.Kind of handy that it was a top billabong rider in the final and a brazillian and the brazo wins in rio,Great for billabong but shit for the'dream tour',brazil is no dream,Bring back Fiji or take it somewhere with waves

Just a suggestion for a new format (maybe this disgrace will be the catalyst for a breakaway series) : Take the two surfers with the highest total heat score average over the whole event and put them in the final, easy and fair, as it covers a variety of conditions. I think if this format was in place, you would have had a very different outcome...the best surfer would have won. Just check out some of the heat scores over the course of the event. Sorry de Souza, you wouldn't have even had a look-in. Some of you may say I'm biased though...;)

Still think they have the format all wrong for these comps, should be that everyone surfs against Kelly and then whoever get the highest score surfs agint Kelly in the final. Then this guy whos doing the commentry get to sleep whith his choice of top 44.

I made a fake bet with my bro for $1000.00 US that Adriano De Souza would win - WISH I HAD FOR REAL. By the way I made this "bet" after he "BEAT" Owen. Seems to me that tour is going back in time... NOT GOOD FOR SPORT! GO FOR BRAZiL - YES. GOOD FOR ADRiANO - YES. GOOD FOR SPORT - NO. I guess he kinda won my heart - but I can't wrap my head around his "WiN". Besides didn't he surf outside of contest site during CJ's heat AND during FiNAL - I know I heard commentators comment on such a thig (hell CJ made a formal complaint - so I heard). Good for Adriano. I ain't a hater. GOOD JOB KiD! Poor JOB JUDGES. If I am ever in So Cal I will buy Adriano a beer - after all - The Surfer's don't control judges. Sorry for rant - this event was emotional for me too - just not in same way as for Brazzos AND Adriano. He really does seem like a cool kid - supporting local surfers. How many can claim that 1. Again Good Job Adriano. No hate - just frustration for state of surfing at moment... Again sorry for rant.

"Dream Tour" NO MORE To quote Owen " I didn't know I got on tour to do floaters" classic AND spot on. With this "new" criteria Brad Gerlac or even Rob Bain could show and blow-up IF the floater is the definition of "new school". HA F-ing joke. Owen's last wave was a 6.83 at least. A 8.2 for a floater?!? Really. Go Bede Go Taj Go anybody else but Adriano "Claims Every Wave" De Souza - of course there is still 10 mins. in this semi against Bede so he can still pop a radical revolutionary (for 90's) floater and win heat, then tour, then the hearts and minds of us haters. NOT!!! Pfffft (as the Aussies say) P.S. Kerrzy full rotation should have won the "Expression" Session yesterday - how the hell does a safety grab 180 at most reo beat out a FULL ROTATION 360 AiR!?! Still can't figure that one out either. OH Wait - the dude who "won" was a brazzo, that's how. Pfffft...
