SEIGNOSSE, France (Thursday, August 28, 2008) Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle is set to begin at 11:45am in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Les Bourdaines.

Event No. 3 on the 2008 ASP Women's World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle will see the best female surfers in the world do battle for the first time since April and Round 1 will play host to some of the most dynamic opening round match-ups of the season.

"The swell that was forecast has changed overnight and we went on hold this morning because of some unfavorable wins, Gerard D'Avezac, Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle Contest Director, said. "The winds have died down now and we're seeing some good waves roll through the bank so we will be running as much as possible today."

Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, former ASP Women's World Champion and current No. 1 on the 2008 ASP Women's World Tour, will look to defend her Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle title starting with a Round 1 bout against Serena Brooke (AUS), 32, and yesterday's Rip Curl Pro Junior winner and event wildcard Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19, while reigning ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, will face the veteran Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, and 2008 rookie Karina Petroni (USA), 20.

Surf-report.com, official forecasters for the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, are calling for surf to remain in the two-to-three foot (1 metre) range throughout the day with calm winds until the early afternoon.

Up first will be former seven-time ASP Women's World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, against lethal Hawaiian Megan Abubo, 30, and 2008 Dream Tour rookie Nicola Atherton (AUS), 22.

The Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle is being webcast LIVE via www.ripcurl.eu home with Round 1 commencing at 11:45am.
