Local surfers in the area are trying to convince the council that a ‘win-win’ situation can easily achieved. A design where the ferries have a pier that meets their requirements and does not damage the waves with backwash. Simply moving the pier back towards the existing one by about 50m and dredging a little deeper inside the pier should achieve this.
Plus it would also have the added effect of lessening the amount of damage done to the pier by the massive winter swells that pound this stretch of coast. Local surfers need to convince the council of how well regarded these surf spots are, both by Irish and international surfers. As part of that we would like you to sign the petition .
It only takes 10 seconds. The West Coast Surf Club in Ireland will present this petition as part of a submission to Clare Co. Council before the closing date of objections on August 5th, 2010. Please, have your voice heard. Let's keep this wave so that its peeling tubes are there for you when you visit Ireland.
Please link this petition to any facebookmyspaceblogs you may have and mail to your surfing friends.
Three souls paddling across the channel for a summertime session at Crab
Bet if surfers wanted to put a housing project on their favourite golf course they would go ape shit! Wankers!!
When will mankind ever learn that the environment is precious, surfers lead the way. RIP many great waves everywhere, the victim of the greedy planners over the years, all over the World.
My heart goes out to the Irish crew. Keep fighting boys, respect from Jersey.
the planning number is p108006
clare coco website http://www.clarecoco.ie/planning/planning-applications/search-planning-applications/FileRefDetails.aspx?file_number=108006&LASiteID=0
write letter of objection, send to planning dept., clare coco, new road, ennis, co clare., that would be a great help.
I propose an assembly and ball-kicking protest in Clare County Council planning offices. Bring your biggest hobnail boots. Alternatively apply for "change of use planning" to convert their offices into a public toilet, see how they like it people start crapping on them.
Submitted an objection to Claire County Council on the enviromental and visual impact of the scheme. How can the investment and damgage caused be justified with regard to the overall negative impact of the scheme, which allowing for seasonal use and weather conditions, will only be fully used for limited periods of the year? Bad news!!
Personally i have never surfed Crab Island as i live up north in Derry and i'm only 14 so sign the petition so this wave will be here for future generations.
lets hope the powers that be realise that surfing is still a growing sport and lifestyle and should not be underestimated on how much revenue it can bring to costal areas
look at devon and cornwall a high percentage of there regular visitors are surfers brining much needed revenue to area
please dont destroy our waves theres normally more options if you look hard enough
I've signed this and so has my wife.
I do however think that the argument has been weakened.
On one hand you are saying the wave is destroyed by washback and then arguing that surfers have to paddle across the ferry path to get to the same wave.
Surely if the wave is destroyed then it's gone and there'll be nothing to paddle to!
Please stick to the one argument that a world class wave which would attract jobs and money will be destroyed
You have my support
its very important that we argue those two points, if we only say the wave will be damaged by backwash they could alter the pier to stop this but we could still be left with the health & safety issue of access. The new pier must accommodate the surfers, in such away that the waves are not effected and we can still safely access the waves. good on ya for signing it.
Number 3241
Been to west coast of ireland twice on surf trips and both times we didnt score this spot. Going again in september and they do say third time lucky!
signed it. these kind of "development ideas" are just a big bag of bollocks. first proper storm will probably move the whole pier down in a blink of an eye.
Done my bit to save that amazing wave. Petition no. 2270 :)
Come on ppl Sign it! (it took me 10 secs!) http://www.petitiononline.com/Doolin10/petition.html
this is retarded, havent surfed here yet but from what iv heard its definitely worth the long paddle, dont want it to be spoiled for a younger generation of surfers who havent even gotten the chance to experience the wave yet
Disgrace if this goes ahead... what a wave surfed it first time 4 months ago passing down from galway to Cork Boi... and wow.... it would sum up the state of this country to a tee if they go ahead with this development.... Government pissing allover the average people TYPICAL
Now hold on here... either this is Irish logic or I'm being as daft as they're stereotyped to be... You have a summer tourist activity, the ferry ride to the island. You have a winter (all year round?) tourist activity, surfing. You want to screw up the attraction of surfing all year round by building a pier to get more tourists onto a boat in the middle of the stormy premenstrual irish winter seas to an island in one of the coldest wettest places in the world. WHO WANTS TO GO "SIGHT-SEEING" IN IRELAND IN THE BLOODY WINTER!!! THAT'S THE STUPIDEST BUSINESS IDEA I'VE EVER HEARD OF!
Nevermind a petition fellas, the guy who had this idea shouldn't have a bloody job. Someone please go give him a good hard kick in his lucky charms.
I'll try to leave this on a constructive note, would the revenue from tourism improve if that construction money and upkeep was spent marketing the surf spot? I mean let's be honest it's a pearler. Us surfers are crazy enough to go to those extremes for exactly that kind of wave, we're all a little bit irish in the head...
Why the negative scores on Brandon's comment ? he's right, it has become a backwards country with people intent on only making money and a fat shower of bastards at the top skimming the cream. You can buy planning for anything and this is what is happening here. Short sighted morons looking out for themselves, I've given you a plus BB
Cheers Rich man.... I hate to say those things about Ireland but its true...... We surely have to fight for what we have good left in this country and thats bloody good surf....
This is a total out rage......... trust the Irish...... I'm sorry but this country is so corrupt that I can see the council passing what they want without considering anyone but there own filthy selves. Wave is created naturally no man intervention at all.... man comes along with his concrete and boom wave is destroyed by man..... What is it with the human mind we have nearly destroyed everything nature has given us with our greedy fat pockets........ Surfing has doubled the tourism in Ireland and rightly so... it's time local councilors realise this and cop the f**k on...... Beaches are getting seriously eroded with all the cars parking on/in the dunes cus there is no base for a car park. We need to protect what we have not just for our own selfish selves but for the millions of people who will surf these waves after us.... F**K the council and anyone who doesn't support this................
im totally with you there man. i've had enough of the bullshit in this place. The people at the top in this country (and lets face it they could well be someone your parents may have grown up with not some out of reach higher society type) have neither the foresight nor the mental capacity to see past their greedy little rat noses. they get into politics in this country for one reason alone and thats to fill their pockets, fuck things up then retire with huge bonuses. these days, i hope are coming to an end but only if people here would have the balls to stand up for what they believe to be right and protect what we are so lucky to have. every advertising campaign lauched by Discover ireland in the past 3/4 years has been trying to promote our country as a prime surfing location yet these numpties are trying to destroy the very thing that is guaranteed to attract tourism. sure fuck it why dont we build a hotel on the burren or maybe build a bloody motorway through one of the most important historic places on or little island and perhaps northern europe, yeah sure they've already done the latter. rant over. please sign the petition no matter where in the world you are.
down with this sort of thing..... but serious, it needs to be a bigger rant than an internet rant. the people who want this developement obviously wont read this thread. so when are we marching? whos with me???
So true portpipe........ We need to go back to what we were a bit more...... a friendly and thoughtful country who cared for this Land!!!!!!! And the bean like I said to you before piss off and go find a bean to flick so that your mind will be less deluded and at peace with what it sends out that thick head of yours...... This is not just about Ireland but for waves all over.. Jah Bless
PLease sign this. Crab is a beautiful wave set in a unique pristine environment. The development would permanently harm both.
Pollack and conger fishing in the harbour area is also world class.
Who do we write nasty letters to?! I will probably never surf Ireland but this makes me soooooooo MAD! I dont care if you are from the US, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, or the f@cking moon...sign that petition or you SUCK! Stand up and be counted because if "the man" can take an Irish wave....he can take any wave!...even yours!!!!!
Awesome wave. Surfed it yesterday 6 foot plus. One of the best waves in ireland. We gotta do everything we can to make sure its still here this time next year. Only takes a few seconds to sign the petition, about the same amount of time you could be spending in a barrel at this Irish gem. Save the wave!
Looks like a sick wave hope to go there and score, with a bit of luck and the petition ill be able to and so will my kid...
only takes one minute to sign so there is no excuse.
