[PT-Ben Jones' Review]
Ben Jones
Location: BOURNEMOUTH/BOSCOMBE (Bos Vegas?) I'm just a channel coast surfer, living on wave scraps and almost getting by. I've been surfing through my teens for five years now, with a bunch of dedicated locals who have proved a driving force in my progression. Occasionally I can find myself partial to a bit of old-school longboarding - having not so long ago, surfed with Beau Young - but I normally reside in the shortboard department. At the moment I'm riding a 6'1" HIC, it's a little beaut when Bournemouth supplies.

On receipt of this DVD and sighting of the pink-red cover, I had my reservations – a documentary about a female surfer with a corny tag-line on the front?

Despite the tag-line, it quickly becomes clear that this film, written and directed by Peter Goetz, searches for something more than the standard 21st Century style of mindless smash-and-grab surf shooting. Indeed, Sofia delves deeper.

The film follows Peru's fight for freedom-from-terrorism in parallel with Mulanovich's fight for a world title - from her humble beginnings in Punta Hermosa, to her climatic take-down of Rochelle Ballard in Hawaii to earn World Champion status.

Goetz's production is truly humbling, as we see how Mulanovich is spurred on to create something out of nothing and make the metamorphosis from poor and deprived to international icon. Sofia almost acts as a metaphor for the desired development of Peru.

The documentary draws direct comparisons with Mixed Tape - the documentary that followed Bobby Martinez's climatic rise to No.1 Rookie in his first year on the Tour. If you enjoyed that, then this is a must-buy. There is a fair amount of Spanish speaking in the film so, in parts, you are left to rely on subtitles... although this is hardly an issue, with the picture and story making up for it.

A direct criticism of the film is that it does not contain enough footage of actual surfing. When we do get shots of Mulanovich's surfing it is distinctly impressive, however this does not make up for the lack of it.

Overall, I would say this film is a great documentary from a young director. Look out for more productions to come from Peter J Goetz.
