SRI LANKA, the original hippy surfer locale with no true world class setups but bursting with quirky culture, history, recent trauma and a bunch of classy right hand points.

For six years they've hosted the SriLankan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay, the East Coast's surfing focus. An event which helped restore a surfing jewel almost annihilated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Everyone in Arugam Bay lost someone that day. Now years down the road to recovery this is once again a thriving surf town which last week combined an ASP 6-Star women’s event and an ASP World Longboard Title (WLT) men’s event.

The surf started off small and was pumping by the event's close, World Longboard Champion Duane Desoto took the win in the mals and young ripper Courtney Conlogue the women's title. Here's a pictorial jaunt around the fringes of this colourful competition.
Arugam Bay from the air. It's an 8 hour drive from the capital Columbo or a 1 hour SriLankan Airlines Air Taxi ride. With views like this it's an easy choice to make. All surf events should have their own airline.

Like any red blooded male, picture 5 does it for me but I am a little disappointed that a pro surfing event thinks it's ok to let female competitors walk around like that in an area with a very strict Islamic culture. We think it's ok but I know from my time spent there that these people are deeply offended by this type of behaviour. We are guests in their country, how about showing some respect!

The population is mainly Buddhist, next would be Hinduism. Most Sri lankans couldn't care less what kind of swimwear surfers and tourists wear so long as they keep it on the beach.

I went here in Sept '06, first week was bliss, the second week the army massacred 12 muslims just by Peanut farm to stir up anti Tamil feeling, cue massive shut down, all tamils fleeing, including the owners of the hotel, leaving us with the keys and telling us to help ourselves and not to open the door of our beach hut in the night! A procession of dead, road blocks, fires and riots rolling in from nearby Pottuvil, clashing with the army just outside Siam View. We were evacuated by the army with armed guards up in to the mountains to a little placed called Ella! an eventful trip for sure! Oh and I hit the reef and had to be referred to the infectious and tropical disease clinic on my return home for my infected wounds! Seems to be all good now tho, great waves all around there, great food and people, just off the beaten track!

The Sri lankan army carried out ethnic cleansing of the Tamil population slaughtering thousands of innocent people. The UN pulled out and let it happen. DISGRACEFUL!

if you thought it was a slog in '08 , trust me , it was a LOT harder in'88

the shit really hit the fan in '85 , from then until the mid '90s things were REALLY tough for the locals , LTTE , IPKF & Lankan army were all there . It wasn't any problem for surfers , it just stopped the crowds . '82 averaged 40 in the water from dawn til dusk & another 30 or so in the teashop waiting . In '88 there were 6 of us in Ulle ,the contrast still amazes me & the late80s - early 90s are some of my most enjoyable sessions at the Bay & elsewhere .

Unique surf spot due to glassy mornings followed by onshore breezes? Like pretty much every spot between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
