This is pretty big to see on the front page of MS!
I learnt to surf here way back for the first time with Fred from Mada Surfari (better connected location than Fort Dolpin), who swam out and gave me a push! Couldn't stand up back then but managed to get some air with a wave bouncing back off the beach!
French is pretty essential but people don't like speaking French so much so bark a few Malasy words. I still got a dictionary!
Bring some little presents for the poor folk. You might want one of those anti shark things
My dream is to travel around the entire african coastline, surfing in every country with a coast. (It is going to be difficult in the mediteranian, but I'll be sure to make at least one wave per country...) But I am going to make sure I take at least a year for Madagascar...
Yussus meneer Bouwer bru, its an island: its not part of Africa's continental coastline. If you were to include all Indian Ocean islands in your quest the mileage would run into the millions...
Might not be part of Africa anymore, but it used to be part of what we now know as Mozambique. And my milage will probably run into the millions. This is not a 5 year quest, this is a 20 year journey I'm talking about. I am going to study Journalism and Photography, and just go around the whole continent, and the islands that broke off from it. Write a book on each countries coastline, focusing around it's beauty, what we are doing to harm it, and what we can do to protect it. Oh, and there will be lots of surfing in there too, but I don't want it to be solely a surf mission, although that is 75% of the whole idea.
hey Francois - sounds like an all time epic trip. if you drop us a line we can maybe help with some info and contacts for various places...check the link for some info and pics of a quality left point in Libya by Stormrider researcher Antony "Yep" Colas (scroll down for libya)
http://www.tresparties.com/PDF/excerpt_surfers_journal.pdf
Antony has also recently visited Tunisia and found decent surf there too.
Please let us know how you get on with your travels - the stormrider guides are really put together by people like you. good luck!
It's going to be many years till I get to Libya. I am going to focus on the Indian ocean in the next few years, starting from the Cape Agulhas, once I finish a one year coarse in photography. Then I'll start with an online coarse in Journalism, doing the South African coast for the 3 years that will take, going to Mozambique on my vacations. After that I'll keep going up the coast till I get to Somalia. Then I'll spend a year at Madagascar. After that there is quite a few countries I'll basically skim over, going a month or two per country max, till I get to the Mediterranean, and start coming down the other side... I'll also like to make a detour to Israel, and make it a pilgramage. I might want to learn Krav Maga (A very intense practical Israeli Martial Art.) for some self defense and a good way to expand my Karate training to something more practical. (I have a black belt, but it is not a very practical fighting art once weapons get involved.) With patience, determination, and a good dose of stubbornness, I think I might just make it. I just have to finish Matric first, and get some traveling experience around my own country.
Forget Krav Maga and Karate kid, if you're going to tour the entire African coastline you'll need a Glock and a pocket full of patroone. BTW, when was Madagascar part of Mozambique or Lorenzo Marques??
I've been dreaming about the reef passes there for a few years (since I first spoted some serious potential there on google earth). Anybody wanting to plan a trip give me a shout.
"30mins away, by motorised dug-out" - says it all really.. superb article. I know i'll probably never get there in person, but I've just been there in my mind. Thanks for posting.
Sick vid, really enjoyed it. Captures the essence of surf adventuring, its not all about the quality of the surf, or the surfer, its about the magical journey into your unknown, the people, the places. nice one Austrians, keeping it real.
