The 30 Year Storm, as local TV news are calling it, delivered a devastating blow© 2009 - JoliDESPITE two days building retaining walls with earth-moving equipment, at 4am this morning, 10-12' walls of foamy Atlantic Ocean came in without knocking and literally pulled the rug out from the Supertubes contest site.
WPS photographic guy Peter Wilson was up in the dark and first on the scene: "The force of the waves caused damage to almost all the contest infrastructure. Huge shipping containers being used for offices and storage were actually floating through the site as the water washed through. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage was been cased by the huge seas to audio, video and computer equipment as well as structural to the buildings."
“We really wanted to run today, but the site structure at Supertubos is too badly damaged today and the conditions at Lagido never materialized,” Damien Hardman, Rip Curl Pro Search Contest Director, said. “We’re still seeing plenty of swell on the forecast and better weather so we’ll be back at Supertubos tomorrow at 8am tomorrow.”
