Billabong ISA World Surfing Games
Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica
August 8, 2009

For the first time in 13 years, Team USA wins the gold medal over Team France today at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica. It was the first time that the USA won an overall gold medal in surfing since the 1996 World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach, California. Coached by Ian Cairns, Team USA competed against 34 other countries in the event. The French Team was led by ASP World Tour surfer, Jeremy Flores who won the gold medal and surfed in the Open Final against two Americans—Floridian Cory Lopez and North Carolina native Ben Bourgeois, and Peruvian Gabriel Villaran. Flores was proud to have won the medal for his country and said it was the "best feeling he had ever had in his surfing career." Team USA's Courtney Conlogue won the Women's final along with a gold medal. In the Longboard Division, another Frenchmen won: Antonie Delpero.

Playa Hermosa was the perfect setting for this event and hopes to be the host of more to come! ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said "This was a great event. The new team format (4 open men, 2 open women and 2 longboarders) proved to be the right decision. The inaugural Billabong ISA World Surfing Games will go down as a historical moment for surfing, with record number of competitors and national teams in attendance.
