'The hold down is quite severe' brilliantly understated.

Had to comment - Just amazing waves and good article. I thought I was catching some decent sized waves at a quiet south cornwall spot. Tasman is out there!

Shippies is just a sick wave. Not for me cos my balls are mere flesh, not steel. Hats off to all the hellmen who tackle her. One day I'll go and watch, from a safe distance!!

I'm with you tbird
mantis283 days ago Reply
from what I have seen, shippies is more of a hole in the ocean than a wave. if you see footage of this place, its a massive amount of water that suddenly developes a hole (or holes) at the bottom of the surging mound. very scarey and probably the reason for the hold down simply because you start off under a lot of water.

whats that paddling up the face of the wave on the bottom photo

Man, 5 and 6 steps are sooooo heavy, but seemingly so unpredictable and with such dangerous consequences! However, much respect to the crazies that are willing to put their lives in harms way for the adrenaline rush. Gotta truly wonder if taking on the fickel nature of that wave is truly worth the risk?

What's it like being smashed by several tonnes of water from a heavy lip like that? Whatever about the hold-down, that must hurt on the impact!
jameshx285 days ago Reply
When it gets over 12-15ft i normally wear a tow vest and that seems to help a lot. I have been winded a few times and even ruptured my spleen but if you train and wear the appropriate gear it minimizes the risk. If your wanting to hit some waves like this it's good to have a really strong mid section in case things do turn pear shaped.. Yeeaaaw JHX

What about neck support? I once got whiplash on a wipeout and it wasn't even a particularly big wave.
Ozmitch285 days ago Reply
Airbag! Are you nuts? Imagine being stuck in that impact zone without being able to swim underwater!!!

What is that spot in pic 4 called? The Tasmanian Devil will be quite fitting.

Surely a case for airbags for surfers. A back back with an airbag on a wetsuit, more than 10 secs under and whooomf, up you go, ha ha. I wouldn't do it without one. INSANE!! C'mon Ripcurl, you gave us the H Bomb, now the A Bomb.

Have a good look at the Shippies step - only for those who can do. Hats off to Hollmer-Cross bros, Marti and the few other locals who really surf this wave.
