Tavarua is the place to go for the ultimate 21st century surf trip. Its luxury accommodation, exclusive access to the lefts of Restaurants and monopoly over Cloudbreak's incredible lefts make it the focus of one of the surf worlds most pressing debates - can someone legally charge you money to surf a wave? According to Fijian tribal laws, the reefs surrounding an island belong to the headman of that island, as does everything on and around that reef - this includes the waves. On Tavarua the rights to the waves at Restaurants were bought up in exchange for development projects on the island. This has allowed the surf camp to claim exclusive rights to Restaurants and more controversially Cloudbreak, which though not owned by the camp, is impossible for non-guests to surf due to heavy enforcement. Restaurants is the ultimate in perfect lefts with long hollow walls, but is inconsistent. Cloudbreak is the outside bombora that vies for the title of ?worlds best left? with G-Land. It's consistent and holds big swells. For expert surfers only.

This graph shows the percentage of days that had a ridable wind swell (7 seconds period or more) or groundswell (10 seconds period or more) of over 3ft. It also shows the dominant wind direction. Not all of these days will neccessarily give great surf, and very short lived wind swells or longer period secondary swells may produce surf not recorded, but it gives a clear idea of the seasonal trend and a rough guide to the chances of scoring something ridable.
