CODE red at Teahupoo, the Tahitian government placed the entire coastline under an advisory, prohibiting most craft from entering the water.
“We’ve certainly never seen Teahupoo in these conditions and it’s not possible to paddle in today so we’ve called competition off,” Pritamo Ahrendt, ASP head judge, said. “With the conditions as they are this morning, I would be surprised if the tow-in session came off as a resounding success. It’s pretty heavy. Good luck to everyone taking a crack at it today, and we’ll be back tomorrow morning to check conditions.”
Days of hype all came down to this, a few surfers and a swell to end all swells. One of the heaviest sessions ever documented and during a competition.
This stuff pales in comparison to some of the Hurricane Irene swell I surfed here in Florida last week...Now, those were some real waves!! I'm talking cresters that were taller than a person!
Dylan Longbottom got in my opinion the biggest and deepest barrel ever ridden in history. (check surfline.com) to see the video. Also, Bruce Irons got the second best ride ive ever seen at teahupoo. This swell is rocking Hawaii right now with some 18ft faces at southwest shores, yesterday it looked like chicama peru out there, on acid. Some mile long rides were going down, Jocko Sutherland was killing it. 4 guys out.
Awesome session, 3 hours on the Billabong website. They are f**king mental and huge respect to everyone in the water. Surprised no one died out there. Check the link and the last wave, he shouldn't be alive !!!!!! don't know who he is but oh my god.. surely XXL wipeout of the year winner !

Watched this live... It was bloody scary watching live cause you didn't know what was going to happen.. if someone wouldn't resurface.. anything like that. Up at 3am face glued to the monitor. The fact nobody died that day was absolutely awesome, like Kelly said he thought someone WAS going to die. My respect goes out to everybody on that day, no least the Tahitian Water Patrol, those guys must use their balls as flotation devices or something along with the people surfing that day.. Andy Irons really was keeping everyone safe that day and bringing in the freakishly huge waves. Respect!
Excellent photos...but the videos really present more of an impact as to the truly massive, dangerous, warping-below-sea-level, spit blowin', heaving maulers those brave (crazy a$$) surfers were riding.
BTW...anyone get plastered on/ scraped across the reef that day?
Because you're supposed to be a big enough fanboy to know everyone by face, the boards they ride, the clothes they wear, earrings, tattoos and any other identifying marks....duh!
