Local Knowledge
The cross is a spot named after a large cross erected in the large sand dune on the beach at this location. This spot is usually mushy, best suited for longboarding, but sometimes the swells with push sand around and the spot will get a decent sandbar, but a more consistent sandbar all around will usually be a little to the east at the Pensacola Beach Pier where sand will push against the pilings and form a better inside bar. The cross on bigger days will break on an outer sandbar, rights and lefts, usually one a little better than the other depending on swell direction, east usually causes more lefts, west visa versa. In the winter is always the best swells, when cold fronts move through. There will be one or two days of blown out victory at sea overhead surf, and then following the front will be a cold windy day with offshore winds where it can be anywhere from 4 to 8 feet and super hollow but never lasts that long so you have to get on it early. Local surfshop Innerlight has a cam for this spot that takes a shot every 8 or so seconds you can view here http://www.innerlightsurf.com/pages/crosscam.html

This graph shows the percentage of days that had a ridable wind swell (7 seconds period or more) or groundswell (10 seconds period or more) of over 3ft. It also shows the dominant wind direction. Not all of these days will neccessarily give great surf, and very short lived wind swells or longer period secondary swells may produce surf not recorded, but it gives a clear idea of the seasonal trend and a rough guide to the chances of scoring something ridable.
