AN epic short documenting discovery in Van Diemen's Land, directly referencing Mickey Smith's introspective Celtic style.

The Fatal Shore was a name given to Tasmania, the island prison, at that time a wild rock hanging off the bottom of the world where the British Empire dumped their most unruly prisoners. Now home to the hardiest of souls who alongside their cold water brethren in the Northern Hemisphere get their kicks searching out modern day horror shows like Shipstern Bluff.

Surfers in order of appearance: James Hollmer-Cross, Tyler Hollmer-Cross, James McKean, Martin Paradisis, Rudi Schwartz, Mikey Brennan.

Huge kudos...HUGE BALLS. But has the line between balls and brains been transcended? I've been called crazy many times but I don't hold a candle to these guys! They are playing Russian roulette and I fear it won't be long before the spot claims its first fatality.

Fantastic piece. Credit where credit is due, why should anything be suggested as being a copy (Dark Side of the Lens)? This short film took a unique location, vision and courage to make. My cap remains doffed.

Who had that second to last wave. It was Huuuge, he jumped the bump skittered to the bottom, got totally barreled (while at the bottom), looked like it was gonna flatten em' for sure and then he squeaked out way way at the end? Awesome

Robert Huges book "the fatal shore" is an excelent read if your into your history. As far as tasmania goes, the stuff about the Macquarie harbour canibals and the genocide of the Aborigines would chill you worse than any amount of antartic water.

Great piece. If it's such a cold water spot though why are some of the guys not wearing hoods in the vid? They're definitely hitting the water at stages. Also good to see videos being shown in real time, makes the wave look all the more impressive

The water temp is a tiny bit warmer but it's mainly the air temp which is on average much more clement. I was there for 6 Months in 1992, went a whitewater rafter from Widemouth to getting pitted on 6-8' kelp covered reefs. Shippies was a certainly a secret from me if known at all then. Thanks Van Diemens Land for showing me the way, respect where due and yes, the sharks... i left solo perfection on several occasions due to the unnerving lumps of kelp drifting around under me, and once after seeing a genuine fin. A 18 yr old pommie doesn't stop to check the shape for long i can assure you.

Antually, it certainlty isn't. maidens IV seem to be a complete joke, and friesean winds is all fiddlydiddly folkslop.

SUGAR ARMY - i think that's what the band is called. the song, no need for lovers...
Spongerdudette449 days ago Unrated Rate Positive Rate Negative
Pisstaker!!! You damn cheeky sod. Maidens IV is more of the intro music but the main song that's blended into it is called ''No need for lovers'' by Sugar Army''

What made anyone think that wave was rideable in the 1st place?
Tragicallyhip450 days ago Unrated Rate Positive Rate Negative
Pretty mind blowing that. Utter respect cos there was no holding back, stalling for those epic tubes rather than driving for the shoulder. The beatings must be horrendous but the rewards are high.

Dark Side of the Lens 2. Probably just my problem, but it's hard to take an aussie accent seriously!! Can't complain with surfing like that though.
amadawn450 days ago +2 Rating Rate Positive Rate Negative
Your right. It is your problem. This epitomizes extreme cold water surfing very well.
