Save our wild coast from Urban Sprawl
Our Wild Coast and Iconic Forests are under serious threat of being bulldozed for commuter suburbs.
The CRD proposed bylaws that would have allowed natural areas all over the Wild Coast to be destroyed, but Dogwood's campaign stopped them in their tracks.
• 1800 letter were sent to the CRD board.
• 200 people came to a camp out to save our forests
• Hundreds more came to public meetings and consultations
So many people spoke out in favour of protecting our Natural areas that the bylaws were completely re-drafted to prevent Urban Sprawl.
This is a huge step forward, but developers will have any easy time applying to amend these bylaws, so we are not out of the woods yet.
The CRD needs a tighter, more democratic process to enforce its land use bylaws and Regional Growth Strategy (RGS).
Community members have been battling to save this area since the 2007 Tree Farm License deletions in 2007. This area is explicitly protected by the RGS and we need to make sure that the CRD follows its own plan land for growth and development.
The Wild Coast has enormous importance to the character of our Island, it has potential to sustain our economy through tourism and forestry jobs and it is home to Indigenous Nations whose title to the land is not being respected.
Dogwood Initiative is working with community members, First Nations, and other concerned groups to preserve the CRD’s forests If you haven’t written in yet please click below to help Dogwood send an even 2000 letters to the CRD telling them to protect our natural areas.
