SANTOS CLAWS .
His Way To Victory At Teahupoo
Photos: Joli
Over three weeks, Bruno Santos proved himself in everything. From 12' to 2', the Brasilian surfed through 10 heats, snapped all his boards, cut himself to pieces, executed world champs, out-classed tube-riding icons, and defeated famous locals. It started in the trials and ended in a final affair this afternoon that was unfortunately a bit of a damp squib, despite the excitement of two wildcards making the final.
Manoa Drollet the hometown/national hero, and Bruno the underground Zilla who'd bizarrely been riding a borrowed 5'9" throughout his giant-killing spree. The waves could only stutter, splutter and cough by the time the final hit the water and Drollet's local advantage wasn't enough, neither were the Tahitian lads who stood on the low-tide reef or cheered from "Manoa's Ark" in the channel. Check the slides.
In the words of Mel Brooks, "The peasants are revolting." Or so it would have seemed to the entire Top 45. Bruninho encased comfortably in a nice blue cupboard. --
Braveheart look-alikes Rod, Percy and Leo, cheering their countryman to victory. --
Miss Tahiti (yellow) catches the final from Manoa's Ark. Manoa took down Parko in the semis, while Bruno erased CJ. --
The Top 45 were the sideshow to the main event today, and they enjoyed it. Here's Freddy P and Dingo showing their Tandem/SUP skills in the Teahupoo bowl. --
Dane Reynolds had his mind completely blown by today's insane chain of events. --
