Yeah was chattin to a fella about to paddle out on one of those things at the Peak as I was coming in. Didn't wait to see how he got on, but it was a pretty sizey day

I was using a finless wake skate over the summer..... you had to be extremely precise with how you weighted the board, with lots of weight on the back foot to keep control. Was loads of fun when I got the hang of it. Might have to give it a go somethime in the surf

Saw a guy do a 360 spin on one and continue down the line in the same session - great move and they dominated that session. They didn't get too many at the peak when it was bigger on the tues tho' -that was a day for fins for sure

James Parry was out on one this morning down this way and had a few good waves. Looked great fun.
Seems to defy logic; the way he was 360ing one second and then shooting off down the line. How do they get the directional stability?
Godrevy; Just like surfing. but smaller (and without the power)

^^^ think the sharp edges help. My experience on the wakeskate showd you had to really weight your back foot as well to keep control

I rode an alaia the other day, one of Roy Stewarts in fact, and by far and away the hardest thing for me was getting into position and turning/paddling onto a wave. A real mission in fact.

Don't get me wrong, getting up and riding it is massively tricky too, but the whole experience is difficult! After an hour I was fucked. The highlight was actually managing to get a wave on my backhand and keeping it all in trim (with the help of a hand on the outside rail).

Worth it though. A bit like learning to surf all over again.

I know I wasn't saying you were dissing them. It just seemed that you were saying that they straight-lined. Just me being a bit flippant. Should have done the rolly eyes maybe.

The guy with the dreads is Matt Williams. He is Tom Wegener's assistant and shaper.

There were two skinny English fellas on our trip. If he had shortish hair then that is James Parry who rides for Tom Wegener and if it was the guy that look like he had a white man's afro then that was Jimbo. Both are exceptionally smooth riders.

The Saffa is Brad and is a great shortboarder and sponger.

On the front hand I find they are like turns but when I ride backhand , yes, it is more like a stall. I personally think riding an Alaia is much more like riding a snowboard. Since I have been riding them I definitely have been using my snowboarding techniques and, again yes, you really slide the tail out from underneath you than carve it.

As Archy says it is like starting again. They don't float your weight so you really have to adapt your paddling technique. I also think they work much better in punchier conditions than weaker slower swell as it gives you that initial inertia.

I'm really enjoying riding mine and it certainly helps with anyone with weight issues as the paddling into a wave really burns some calories. :-D Also paddling out and duck-diving is such a joy. The easiest thing to sink below the wave. :-)

^^ ^^ That's so true.

They also squirm around under you as you paddle for waves, adding to the 'Rodeo' element of it all.

Quite addictive though :-D

Now Now ladies ..... they are absolute bastards to paddle into waves on .. jimbo , brad , matt and james are in fact made of pauwlonia as opposed to Tom who is made more from beer , this obviously helps in the flotation dept .. if you dont want to stand ride em prone .. Tom rides his prone more than standing & once youve got your head round the obvious sponging similarities you'll dig how close to the wave you are , how shit onshore closeouts become a blast & how fast you can go ! The trip was just an excuse to get away , to finish Tom & families euro tour in style & find pointbreaks which generally suit the alaias better . although Matt & Tom did surf the peak on the Tues you'll see they were scratching on the shoulder & fins still have a very real purpose ! As for nicking my pics Leary ... well .... Heres a shot from Lionel of Tom on the Tuna at Tullan just to get toungues wagging !
