ah cool, mate just go for it! before i did this i had never even used a planer of any sort or even seen a board blank haha
right well materials are good for me as i have mates that work for a boat yard that makes these super yachts. and my dads in the navy so free prepreg (next board

).
so i can get top of the range resin for £2.50 a kilo, but that dries almondy colour (but this stuff is so strong! easily twice as strong as standard board isothylic resin). but for whatever resin you us you also need this wax stuff which makes the surface of the resin hard and sandable which you use with the hot coat and gloss coat, and of course you need catalyst (i got the wax stuff and cat free)
to make the board it cost me.
£65- blank
£12- 5m of 4oz twill weave fibreglass cloth
£1- 100 latex gloves
£2- latex squeegee
£2- 5kilos of asetone
£9- 4'' super soft brush (for gloss coat so it leaves no brush marks)
£1- masking tape
£10- all the fin plugs
£1.50- leash plus
£2- white pigment
£5- fine cut saw
£7.50 3kilos of resin
£118 total (but you only need to buy most of that once)
other the tools i used
-little £15 heater for my shed (i keep it at about 20degree C) do the glassing outside so it takes ages to set so plenty of time to work with, then bring inside to go hard. (dont point heater at board, as resin goes soft and shit at about only 100 deg Farenheit)
-80+120 grit sand paper
-wood sanding block with foam between the sandpaper and block
-electric planer
-finger planer
-round spongey sanding pad for my drill
-i made some board thickness callipers
-with some clear acrylic i made board measuring this so i can mease the stringer to rail distance on both sides at the same time.
thats it.
my stage by stage process.
-cut the out line of the board first
-get the concave on the bottom how you want it
-get a bit of wood the length of the board and use a spirit level to make sure its well... level. then mease down from it to the nose and tail and mark the rocker and tail kick you want.
- cut down to these marks and smooth of bottom so water flows nicely

- now dont touch the bottom again
-get the rough finish and shape on the top you want
-get your callipers and and keep measuring and evenly taking material off till you get the thickness you want
-do ya rails
-measure all parts of the board to make sure its all symetrical and right!
- use the small planer to make the stringer level with the rest of the foam ( only go 'downhill' with the planer or it gets stuck, so on the deck, go nose to middle, and tail to middle, and on the hull go middle to nose and middle to tail)
-do a final sand to get rid of hand grease and such (resin hates hand grease)
- mark your fins using the tool i described so the outer fins are in the right spot (just use measurements from your fav board or just whatever you want)
i think thats all, so your ready to glass.
3 stages in glassing, lamite the cloth on (1 layer bottom, 2 top) using squeegeeeeeeee. leave to dry (it will stay slightly tacky)
tap of half way round rails leaving the tape sor of hanging (so you dont get resing drip marks around the board)
use a mix of resin catalyst and that wax stuff (same amount of wax to catalyst)
brush on evenly with big brush to get in all the lil nooks and crannys
peel off tape when the resin starts to gell
leave to dry and then repeat for other side (try and match tape lines)
once hard and dry, sand off all smooth (do NOT go mad and hit the cloth... thats bad!)
drill your holes for fin plugs and leash plug and fit them (ask how if u want)
tape off again like for hot coat bit cover the the fin plugs and leash plug with tape
use the same resin mix as for hotcoat and brush over all nice and smooth (dont brush too much so the resin has time to settle smooth whilst its still really liquidy)
peel off tape at gelling point again, let it go hard and repeat for other side.
your done.... leave the board to cure somehwere warm like ur house. when it stops smelling completely its pretty much cured (depending on resin +temp it takes like 6 days)
Eastcoaster... where one dark star makes me wet my pants
