Paulowina Fish (001)

Hi all - You may have noticed I have been asking for fish templates / fin placements and other shaping questions. Well the reason is I have been building a Paulowina fish from one of Roy Stewarts kits all the way from NZ. This is my first shaping experience btw. Here is my progress. Enjoy.

The wood to make the deck and bottom panels:Panel 1 and 4

Fins - not really happy with the fins at the moment - I made them out of 2x4mm bits marine ply with a sheet of 2 mm Paulowina inbetween. Paulowina foils much better than the ply btw. I will probably remake them out of all Paulowina as I have some stock left over.



Now I have to wait for internal Panel 3 to cure then I will build the rocker jig.(Probably at the weekend).

The 'Garden Fence' look is just the wood stain and will be gone when I do the shaping part.

Thanks for the encouraging comments - It has been scary in parts as I know nothing about shaping / building a board / fin placement etc - its a big learning curve for me but its very enjoyable. I want to get it finished by the start of September when Im off to France for 2 weeks - a good testing ground.

Its very true, Im learning loads which I hope will help me out when I do my next board - I think I will have enough Paulowina left over to make another board (panels 1 and 4 only)but will have to get some other stock for the internal panels, maybe some balsa or cedar.
Not sure its very easy to get longer lengths of basla in the UK. Anyone know?

Might be asking you a few questions when it comes to glassing / finishing if thats cool?

I will try and get some pics of me surfing it in France in Sept. - I took a picture of the glue cos it was fu*kin expensive!!!

Okay - spent a few hours on it this weekend - currently waiting for the third panel to cure.

Good show Rez interesting weights there, we prefer mountains of book bottles of water boxes of nails and the builder squatting on the nose for a few hours but each to their own

You are a bit light on the number of rocker jig cross members but all's well that ends well and it looks like it's laminated up nicely

When cutting out the planshape make sure that your handsaw has enough set on it as then it's easier to keep the cut nice and plumb to the deck (remember that it should be cut plumb to the deck. not vertical

I did think about putting more cross members for the jig but I ran out of wood - the ply that I used for the top was quite thick so im sure it will be fine - I hope!

Oops didn't see the ply i thought you were laminating straight on top of the cross members.

Regarding the 'plumb' comment I mean that the board should be cut out at a right angle to the deck. . . . . so where the nose rocker swoops up the cut will not be plumb or vertical but at 90 degrees to the deck.
