Lone young surfer - Costa Rica and Indo?? safe?

Im planning to do 6 months traveling in my gap year and at the moment have decided that indo and costa rica are the places where i want to spend most of my time. Partly because they have great surf and partly because they are generally pretty cheap. I will be just turned 19 when I start my travels and the idea of traveling to these places by myself seems a bit daunting. How safe would it be? i assume that I would be a bit of a target for petty crimes. Are there any areas that you would recommend going to or staying away from in indo and costa? Anybody been in a similar situation (travelling lone to these places at a young age)?
At the moment Im thinking North Pacific for Costa for March and April and then Bali for the next 4 (thats if I don't go anywhere else)/].

Yes they are fine as long as you don't do anything stupid, millions of tourists go there every year!! Just watch out for local police and getting caught with illegal items, i.e dot get caught!!

Listen up. Wanna do Costa Rica right and not get killed, ripped off, or abused?
For openers: Do NOT rent a car from U-Save or Avanti. They are actually the same company. They have two names because they suck twice as bad. Economy is terrible too.
You have LOTS of choices in Costa Rica. You DO NOT want to go anywhere near Tamarindo. It's sooooo plastic and packed to the gills with every kind of loser imaginable. More Tourists here than on Waikiki Beach. It sucks really really really really really bad. Of course some dim bulb will tell you Tamarindo is great. Trust me, it's not. Tamarindo is not what Costa Rica is all about. Dominical is mega consistant and it's close to Pavones. Might be worth your while, its always been worth mine.
Hermosa is excellent and is close to a million good breaks, and it's right next to Crazy Town! (I mean Jaco). Jaco man,Whew!
SAFE? Well, not really. I mean you're probably not going to get shot but You're definitly gonna get something stolen for sure. Surfboard, backpack, wallet, something. It can't be avoided in Costa Rica. Sad but true. You WILL get something stolen in Costa Rica. Travel LIGHT bro, and never never never let your board out of your sight! Sleep with your leash attatched and keep one eye open for scorpions in your bed! They're there! Ususally hiding uder your pillow then when you least expect it you've got a poisonous nasty scorpion on your FACE! OUCH! It's gonna happen bro. Sorry, they were here first!

Bro, they love it under the pillows and they instinctivly go right for your face. The bastardos come out at night and usually can be found in the kitchen or in the bathroom. Don't get up to pee at night! . The gnarly thing is that they sometimes crawl upside down on the ceiling at night and will fall on you bed or in your hair or on your face! After they sting the crap out of you multiple times, your body goes into mini convulsions and a fever quickly sets in. If your lucky, you'll be back in the water in a month, maybe two. Also, if the 'stinger' gets lodged into your face you have a good chance of going blind in one eye. This is not a good thing if you are already a masterbator like DR. Jive.
The beastly scorpions will even crawl up your stinky arse! Just ask the stinky, I mean "hunky" Dr. Jive! There's one up his tight arse now I think!

First of all Twink, no one is abusing anyone, we're having a little fun ripping on eachother, that's all. Don;t you kid around with your friends? Oh that's right, you have no friends. Is that why you're traveling alone to Costa Rica? Most surfers can pull that off quite easily as Costa Rica is very user friendly (except U-Save Rental Car). im travelling alone on my gap year because i think it will be a lot more beneficial and i will actually have a better experience. And I am travelling with friends for some part of my gap year anyway, not that i particularly care if you think im mateless or not (i do actually have quite an active social life, lots of parties etc), after all you are a person who clearly spends a lot of their time on a forum when they could be going out with mates, surfing etc. And im not sure where this whole hand holding and cuddling idea comes from, all i wanted to know was how safe it was and what to look out for in a bit more detail and as I have always travelled to 'western' countries with friends and family before the idea of travelling to a central american and south east asian country by myself is slightly daunting. Im not really sure how you cant understand that.
