Yes, hope all is going well now. We had similar out-of-the-blue experience 13 yrs ago, took a couple years to get some faith back in the future. Good luck to you both!

ah thats good news then.

Life's like that, you're coasting along and something massive just strikes you out the blue when you least expect it.

Not on the same level, but a while ago my brother came surfing with me (he'd only been once before) to a small day in croyde 2 summers ago. He was standing chest high in water and the whitewash pushed him straight into the path of another board, which knocked his front 4 bottom teeth out. After always having looked after his teeth so well, he required months of bone reconstruction, gum work and implants, which totalled around £10,000. all because of an out of the blue freak accident.

Guess it just reminds you, it could often be so much worse and to be thankful for what and who you have.

My brother rarely surfs, but he thought he was the grim reaper for a while. Went in once at Ocean City, surfing a hurricane swell. Guy who he was in the water with dislocated shoulder on first wave. Next time he was surfing in Bali, went in with a girl he met there, she was standing in water chest deep and a wave lifted her board ans smacked her in the face with it, breaking her nose and making it bleed like a stuck pig. He has been out with me since and broken the bad luck streak, as we both emerged intact.

Bah, surfed coney beach at porthcawl today, carpet out of action so got on the quad.

3-4ft strong cross offshore closeout. Not ideal conditions by any means, but only got 3-4 short rides in 3 hours. loads and loads of fluff ups and missed waves. Must admit, whilst the sheer manoeuverability of the quad is nice, i sorely missed the early wave entry, glide+flow of the carpet and log.

Quad was shit the other day, so thought id revert to the log. fcuking balls. had 1 or 2 nice ones, the rest were nosedives, misses, complete fcuk ups or just general rapeage by the white water. 3 surfs in one week...all complete tripe.

Im trying to tell myself it's simply the swapping between boards which is the problem, but fact remains, ive not surfed this fcuyking shit in months. Why do i bother.

Got in for the earles - very little wind, bit of north in it, bit glassy and sweet looking head high-ish sets and it is just getting light. Not a car to be seen (I guessed all would wait for the 5 star Sunday). I paddle across the river to a little peak I clocked from the hill... sat there. And it was like some one turned on a fucking huge, great big fan. HUGE westerlies, I looked up at the sky as dark clowds rolled in and fist sized droplets of rain felt like they were stripping my flesh. I took off on one wave and the face was bumpier than Gordon Ramsay's - Was like surfing a giant wallnut. A stand up Paddle boarder flew past like he was windsurfing with an invisible sail the wind was that strong. Froth, chop - just shit.
So it took me about a month to paddle back across the river. And to mock me - was a rainbow, then hail AND thunder and lightning - 40mph wind - all at the same time! YOU DON'T GET THAT KIND OF WEATHER IN THE BIBLE!!!!
Total shit.
Got to the car - forgot my towel

I'd just got the arm out of my suit before the storm hit. Then my friend's board blew away and landed in the middle of the carpark. Yet to check the damage.

Just when I think I've made visible improvement I have a total mare at Godrevy. One step forward and about 5 back
Worst surf i can remember having for at least 3 months.
Topped it off by dropping in on Godrevy Grom (I honestly thought he was taking the right  ) and then, as I tried to pull out, span out.
My last vision was of my board sliding sideways straight for him.
Hopefully no harm done and he accepted my apology like a gentleman.
Godrevy; Just like surfing. but smaller (and without the power)

Ha Ha......must admit the little bugger is surfing well.
We're both well. Up your way for the next couple of days.
Taking the redundant status as an opportunity to explore new avenues and Mrs UD has always wanted to move nearer the kids so we are looking at about 10 houses from Braunton to Yelland tomorrow and tuesday.

Hot off the press this one. Turned up at a distant spot on Sunday to find it closed, turned around to head back to the usual home break to find a crowd the size of Texas there, got dropped in on by a beginner on the only wave worth having (on the inside) and caught a shorebreak in. It sucked BIG TIME! You wait for months for a decent swell and then this shit! And the reef down the road a way was over populated by bodyboarders as well, so no luck there either. I wanna crrrryyyy sob :-(
