Home to many of Australia's big wave spots, smack in the middle of the Roaring 40s and receiving the same swells which hit Indonesia. Swell direction is almost entirely from the south-west and winds veer from south or south westerly in summer to often onshore during the winter months when the largest swells arrive. The Freemantle Doctor will often blow-out summer surf by afternoon. Perth to the north offers smaller waves and a relaxed city surfing vibe. Swells further south are sizeable so be prepared to seek shelter when it is big or pack a gun. Temperatures range from 15 to 22°C or 59 to 72°F between summer and winter. First surfed by Perth lifeguards in the 1930s hazards such as snakes and sharks are a very real threat across the entire region.
