Sharks are the most famous water-dwellers on this coast. However the potential quality of the waves pull many hardcore surfers in regardless. Roaring 40s swells pulse up from the Southern Ocean lighting up quality reef breaks such as Point Sinclair and Chinamans on a coastline which faces south-west into any swell which propagates north from its dominant southerly track. The best wind season is the autumn when offshore northerlies are common. During the rest of the year onshores dominate. The cold sea only varies from 12-15°C or 54-59°F, but despite this the area around Adelaide has been surfed by locals since the 1930s.
