Peru's northern tip favours North-westerly swells and as such only really works during the north hemisphere's winter. Home to Chicama arguably the world's longest wave this arid region is populated by numerous high quality reefs and points. Below the northern tip which is warmed by the Panama Current, the rest of the region plays host to consistent south-west swells from the Roaring 40s and southerly winds, predominantly (easterly) offshore in the mornings, swinging slightly westerly and onshore in the afternoons. These are a product of the cool Humboldt current and dominate the whole of this western coast of South America from central Peru downwards. The country's surf culture is perhaps the oldest in the world and is claimed to date back to 3000BC when the waves were ridden on reed boats. Water temperature here fluctuates between 17-25ºC or 63-77ºF.
