Say Victoria and surfers think of the Great Ocean Road and Bell's Beach. Much of the surfing is focused on the stretch of coast west of Melbourne, home to Bells and Winkipop and cross-offshore in the prevailing westerly winds yet open to Roaring 40s swell. Breaks to the east of Melbourne pick up more swell but are suffer a dominant onshore wind scenario. Tasmania does theoretically block some south swells from the central region but in the main groundswell heads in from the west or south-west. Water temperatures fluctuate between 13 and 20°C or 55 to 68°F. Surfing was pioneered in the area in 1919 by Lou Whyte after he returned from Hawaii with a board and the rest as they say is history.

Often included are guided surf tours of the best local spots along with surf hire, videos, photography, professional coaching and even some night life.
