ONE of the perks of being a partner in Kandui Resort in the Mentawai Islands is the ability to check the swell forecast and charge over there if things look promising. Writes Anthony Marcotti
After checking and re-checking the swell models and weather forecasts for early April I decided to pull the trigger, book a ticket, and shed my wetsuit for what was shaping up to be five days or more of double overhead waves at a few of my favorite spots.
This was my 29th trip to Indonesia and the guests on the island I was now traveling with were part of a special trip Billabong hosts at Kandui every year called "Surf With a Pro". This was their third trip to Kandui and for whatever reason they seem to have a penchant for good luck as they always get a big, clean swell that lights up all of the reefs in our area like the Las Vegas strip. The pros on the trip were two absolute gentlemen, Shane Dorian and Peter Mendia, and as I met the surfers traveling with them on the boat ride to the resort I knew we had a great group who were brimming with excitement at what was to come.
Goodbye 52 degree California water and no waves, hello 86 degree water and perfect waves!
