STEPHANIE Gilmore claims fourth world title at the Rip Curl Search Puerto Rico cementing her status female surfing's greatest talent.
All suntan and flashing smile, Steph, the stereotypical Aussie champ has seemingly effortlessly won four world championships on the bounce. Why is this? Because she's so good or everyone else is a bit rubbish?
Truth be told the top 10 female surfers in the world are head and shoulders above their competitors and currently Steph stands proud of the pile, at least a nose above the rest. Needing only to win her quarterfinal against Mel Bartels she sneaked it by 1/10 of a point and with it took the championship. Time and again champions find that '10th' which must irritate opponents infinitely.
"I'm really at a loss for words right now," Gilmore said. "Mel is one of the most dangerous surfers in the world and has had my number on several occasions. Even on that last wave there, I was certain she'd got the score. I was blown away when they called it out and I'm rapt right now."
