The Arnette Punta Galea Challenge has been given the green light to run Europe’s only stop on the Xpreshon Big Wave World Tour this Sunday, December 22nd.
It’s a big step-up for Europe with this event now elevated into a full-blooded stop on the new look giant wave tour. Director, Gary Linden, has promised a full HD webcast for the first time at this monster peak located off the town of Getxo, 15 kilometres from Bilboa in the Basque Country. Expect small men riding large mountains and live streamed into your living room.
The North Atlantic is currently firing on all cylinders and on Sunday Euro big wave riders such as last year’s winner, 17-year-old, Natxo Gonzalez, Indar Unanue, Jaime Fernandez, Axier Muniain, amongst others will be pitted against international big wave masters such as Peter Mel, Greg Long, Grant “Twiggy” Baker and Carlos Burle for $50,000 USD in prize money and valuable points towards the Big Wave World Tour Title race.
“A series of back-to-back pulses kicked into action by a resurgent winter jet-stream have provided multiple options for European big wave surfers.” Says event forecaster Ben Freeston “The first pulse is lower period and the wind will add local short period sea to the mix (as well as harbouring a risk of onshore conditions at times) thus the decision is to hold for Sunday’s pulse. This swell has the size, power and the all important NW direction needed to find its way into the harbour entrance at Punta Galea. The event swell will arrive on top of the remainder of the last pulse and this mix tops-out at a forecasted 14ft at 18 seconds. These numbers won’t equate to a single swell peaking in the same range, and we expect a little inconsistency at the top end of the size range as the swell builds, but generally southerly local winds should make for a great day of competition.”
