The XXL Big Wave Awards showcase the unbelievable cojones of international big wave surfers. Undoubtedly the most flinch-inducing of these contests is the Wipeout of the Year award. Somewhat like a horror film, you don't want to watch, but you can't look away. With that in mind we've gathered a few of the 2015 entries for your viewing pleasure/displeasure.

Early Entries for the Wipeout of The Year Awards

First up Lucas Silveira (Brazil) at Puerto Escondido, Mexico on July 5, 2014. Lucas is a brave kid, and he suffers for it in this clip. Catching a rail on the drop, he goes down hard. He is sucked back over the falls, popping his head out for one last gasp before being pummeled into the sand. Ouch. Video by Alexandre Silveira.

Gabriel Villaran (Peru) at El Buey, Arica, Chile on August 5, 2014. Gabriel goes for the late drop at this big wave arena, but instead is taken by the lip for his efforts. It's a long free-fall, until he penetrates the water with the lip on his head. Video by Brenda Mayorchi.

Another one from Puerto Escondido, this one is Andres Flores (Dominican Republic) on July 6, 2014. What begins as an excellent grab rail drop quickly turns sour as Andres nose dives into the face. He carries his speed though as he is sent skimming across the water before it dumps on him. Video by Daniel Nava.
