YALLINGUP, Western Australia (Sunday January 30): Taj Burrow territory delivered epic surf for finals day of the prestigious and renown Billabong Taj's Small Fries comp which runs as a quality mobile event in the surf rich region of south west Western Australia.
High scores and a charging commitment to the powerful surf that was up to 2m was the only route to the finals and all the 16 and under enthusiastic grom's at this event relished the conditions and put on an awesome display!
Jack Robinson, the 13 year-old Margaret River local with an already revered reputation rose to the challenge in the Boy's 16 final, opening with 3 excellent tube rides in his final to take his second consecutive Taj's Small Fries win.
"When the waves are that good you just go and choose the best waves, surf your best and hope you win" said Jack after the final.
A 9 point ride on one of his rides early in the final looked like Jack might wrap the final up early but Jeames Young (NSW) and Shaun Green (WA) had other ideas and both found excellent high 8 point rides late in the final and were serious challenges to Robinson.
The only interstate surfer to win today was Victoria's Zoe Clarke who took out both the 16 and 14 Girls divisions. Clarke was the defending 14 Girls champion and at just 13 years of age displays all the characteristics of a surfer ready to dominate her junior ranks.
"Probably the best contest waves I've ever surfed in" said Clarke after her win.
"It's such a great event - they go and find us amazing waves to surf in and everyone surfs really well and has a great time here!"
Other interstate surfers to perform well today were Reef Hazelwood (Qld/Sunshine Coast), Kipp Caddy (Ulladulla/NSW) and Jeames Young (Yamba/NSW) who all placed 2nd in their respective divisions.
Local surfers Jacob Wilcox (Margaret River) and Duke Nagtzaam (Yallingup) both took impressive wins in their divisions.
Taj himself made it to the presentation after a morning of surfing an epic nearby break and was super stoked his event again delivered for all the talented youngsters who made it here - " It's so good to see over 140 super charged young surfers here and I'm stoked they got great waves throughout."
Surfing youngsters in great surf has become a common theme of this event over the past five years - and every year the young surfers rise to the challenges, score big and deliver incredible performances.
It has the author of this media release firmly believing that putting talented young surfers into excellent surf for competitions is an essential element to producing great surfers - If that's true, the talent coming out of WA in the coming years will be closely following in the footsteps of Taj Burrow!
