KELLY Slater out, Mick Fanning out, Andy Irons out, plus a Jordy Smith victory over Owen Wright and a day of pumping swell... it was a bumper day down at the Billabong Pro J-Bay.
Today was pretty incident free if you forgot that Kelly is out and Jordy is now number one on this planet. The biggest crowd of the event packed the beach out and all the surfers stayed around till dusk, even Kelly which says something. Probably that he's mentally logging every scoring move in his judging database brain.
Will the contest run to a conclusion tomorrow? If it's contestable (which it looks like it will be) then you'd have to be a brave contest director to hold off and make everyone wait a week for a swell which has yet to be created. The charts for the next five days do not look hopeful with a bump promised for the end of the week.
There's a hell of a lot of swell out there right now -- with a slightly more southerly direction J-Bay would be all time. As it is, the swell looks to be heading more westerly as Sunday progresses, which combined with a dropping swell appears less than ideal. A hard call to make.
