Kirra’s Dawn at the Roxy Pro

THE Quarterfinals were all that that down at Kirra yesterday in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast. Four heats which left: Tyler Wright vs Stephanie Gilmore and Sally Fitzgibbons vs Carissa Moore. Can we already say that the 2013 Women’s World Champion will come from one of these four semifinalists?

Less is apparently more when it comes to Kirra, the Snapper pumping #fail has resulted in the lingering sand being progressively stripped off the groin at Kirrra and smoothed and groomed down the line. It’s not perfect by any means but heck it looks better than Rainbow Bay. Tyler Wright summed it up: “I’m surprised they put us out there instead of the boys but it’s sick”

The call was made to move the contest site and it was on at thick, square, unpredictable Kirra, sucking impossibly hard and fast off the bank. Then Steph dropped into a 9.8 and bang, she had tamed Kirra, the mythical wave. One which makes Parko grin like a 5-year-old with a cardboard box.

I think I was pretending I was Mick for a moment there in the tube. Just for a moment.Stephanie Gilmore

Stephanie Gilmore, reigning five-time ASP Women’s World Champion and defending Roxy Pro Gold Coast winner, wowed spectators and opponents alike with an incredly-deep forehand barrel, netting a near-perfect 9.80 out of a possible 10 to advance to the Semifinals past opponent Alana Blanchard.

“It’s tricky out there this morning but every now and then, there’s an incredible one so that was a good heat,” Gilmore said. “I always flashback to all the greats out at Kirra and I think Mick (Fanning) was and still is one of the best. I think I was pretending I was Mick for a moment there in the tube. Just for a moment though.”

Gilmore will face compatriot Tyler Wright, 18, in Semifinal 1 when competition resumes.

Despite the rapidly-dropping tide, Carissa Moore, 2011 ASP Women’s World Champion, adjusted to the deteriorating conditions in the final Quarterfinal of the morning, ousting Pauline Ado, with some impressive forehand turns.

“The tide was getting really low for Pauline (Ado) and my heat,” Moore said. “I had to make some adjustments and it became more about turns and less about barrels but I am happy to get through the heat. Hopefully we get improved conditions to finish in.”

When competition resumes, Moore will take on Sally Fitzgibbons, in Semifinal 2.
