Layer to the Core

ALBEE Layer grew up watching Maui's big waves break, he saw the generation before pioneer Peahi and inherited that peculiar desire to paddle big waves.

Above all, Albee is interesting and dedicated, without these facets his talent would mean nothing. He claims not to care for the big time, rejecting the whims and vagaries of the pro scene and shuns the fashion-forward mindset. Alongside partner in crime, Matt Meola, they go big on the small stuff and increasingly live for waves of consequence.

"I'm looking to find a niche away from all these contests, who's the coolest, who's wearing what type of tight jeans... It's all about riding those waves. I don't know where it's going to take me, but I'm committed to the ocean one way or another."

Castration slacks may never clad his cojones, but surfing will always embrace the anti-hero and being against the 'system' will probably endear him to the mainstream, such is the series of circular contradictions governing surfing favour.
