Mentawai: Buy One, Get Two Free

Swell of the year? … is a big claim with such a long season ahead but that was one heavyweight week. During the core Mentawai season scoring one big swell for a pre-booked trip is pretty standard, scoring two swells is extremely lucky and scoring three huge swells is completely unheard of. Until now.

In even better news there were not any pros in the area since it was the same time as Bali contest. And damn did it pump for the people. Those lucky enough to score the Playgrounds at the end of June walked straight into a macking swell; perfect for the heaving pits of Bankvaults and bookended by a brute at Kandui. Sometimes you get what ask for and sometimes you get more than you could have ever desired.

Our guests walked straight into some of the best Bankvaults in years for three solid days, then another swell hit Bankvaults and/or Hideaways for three days, before finally (as if we needed more, but we’ll take what is offered) the biggest swell we had this year for Kandui Left. I actually got some of the best waves I’ve ever snagged out here during the second day at Kandui and am pretty stoked on it.

Looking at the forecast we knew it was going to pump but couldn’t dare hope that all three swells were going to arrive as they did with light winds and perfect conditions. My mind was blown this week.
