KELLY Slater claimed his fourth Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach title by beating Mick Fanning in the finals at the back-up venue of Johanna Beach.
After a slow start Mick put together a couple of scores and Kelly was on the ropes. Slats answered back via a massive alley-oop, netting an 8.93 before backing it up with 8.10 and with it the title.
Now sitting in second place the 10th world title speculation machine can be revved up again. Deservedly so, when he surfs like this you wonder why anyone ever wrote him off for not being progressive enough to thrive under the new judging criteria?
"It was a lot more difficult than it looked," Slater said. "I was getting bumped and bounced and falling and I had five or six waves before I got something going. On that 8.93, I was up in the air and when I landed, I kind of fell on my butt and did the one-footed shuffle, but I recovered there. Then I paddled straight into that second wave and that was it."
