Not Just Another Indo Trip

NOT just another Indo trip? Actually it is. Here we have Jayce Robinson’s and Lyndon Wake’s post-justification for having a ball in off-season Indonesia, the scurvy toads. Their winter bail was rewarded with some stonking waves but provoked strong impressions of a changing landscape - it’s long way from Santosa these days.

Lyndon: Bali the island of joy for some and hate for others. Also the isle of Indonesia that created the ‘Subak’ otherwise known as the complex irrigation system developed to grow rice across the archipelago. This system may have been created hundreds of years ago but it still remains the essentially same. However around this constant the island is changing drastically.

It can get very boring, hearing about a load of extremely privileged people going traveling each winter, scoring waves and then still coming back moaning.

I’m sure everyone has heard of the pollution issues that face Bali right now, the likes of Kelly Slater are talking about it, but that doesn’t even scratch the surface and as traveling surfers, every last one of us should be concerned and try to step up to do something about it.

This time around, myself, Jayce and a group of friends decided to skip the things I normally like to moan about and hop on the most unreliable airline service in the world, Merpati Airways, eventually dropping ourselves into Lakey Peak. The place offers a range of fantastic things including: surfing, surfing, and surfing a bit more surfing, plus the odd malaria scare. It seems that although only a distance of 153 miles away from Bali, the island of Sumbawa is much more favourable during the wet season months, offering nice relaxing, glassy mornings and evenings, then scolding midday heat with the odd rain shower once every few days to try and cool things off.

I try not to talk about surfing too much, for everyone reading it can get very boring hearing about a load of extremely privileged people traveling each winter, scoring waves and then still coming back moaning about things here or there. Which is why I feel its worth rounding this up. I was a pessimist myself on going to Indonesia in our winter months, but my mind has been opened and it’s worth the journey, for sure it’s a lot better than sitting out the cold.

The place offers a range of fantastic things including of surfing, surfing, and surfing a bit more surfing, plus the odd malaria scare.

Once you get into Bali, avoid the Kuta trap and get out. There are loads of very reasonable places to stay up on the Bukit, or in Sanur, so you’re closer to the waves you want to surf. If you want a break, spread your wings into Ubud for some serious shopping and haggling, or go up further north, see the mountains and temples, or do a bit of diving in some of the clearest waters in the world.

Whatever you want to do, surprisingly, Indo has it there for you. Go get it. And I’m not talking about the shits!
