ON again, off again, it's tough at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal for fans and surfers alike. Swell is not the issue, there's plenty of that coming out of the Atlantic in the next few days, buckets of it, replete with lashings of wind and rain. In an attempt to get as much surfing in as possible before the weather Sunday saw the completion of the final heats and Round 2 and Monday saw an attempt to get Round 3 off and rolling, before being promptly stalled by the clean but inconsistent conditions. Before the brakes were applied John John Florence was victorious in the opening heat of the day, surviving a slow affair with Travis Logie. Finally, Gabriel Medina closed-out the day's action with a high-flying affair against Brett Simpson. © 2013 Rip Curl
Sunday saw the final four Round 2 heats of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal completed this afternoon in challenging conditions at Supertubos. Kolohe Andino provided the upset of the day (at least as far as the fans were concerned). He continued his flash of form in defeating sole Portuguese representative Tiago Pires in the final heat of the day and right on the buzzer. "It's finally paying off," Andino said. "I've been trying really hard to wake up early, stretch and all that stuff. It's a bummer for Tiago, he's probably got all his people down here but it's cool to see that they're really passionate about surfing and their surfers." Andino will take on Taj Burrow when competition resumes... here. © 2013 Rip Curl
