"This is the one event that has been dear to my heart for many many years," said Peter. "It's like that for all Santa Cruz natives - we want to do good in this event. And here I am 40 years old and still out there competing, but this is probably going to be my last Cold Water Classic event," he said.
Joining him into the round of 96 is another local who is managing to do two jobs in one here in Santa Cruz - O'Neill Wetsuits Surf Marketing Manager, Kieran Horn. "It's a great distraction for me to get into the water. I get to go in and just surf," he said.
"Looking at the draw I saw I had two other locals - that was nerve-wracking," said Kieran. "It's always tough going against friends you surf with and have grown up with - you want them to make it. Plus I know those guys know how to surf waves out here, so there was not much local advantage today."
