A FEW competition directors would top their own mothers for waves like these. Others would turn over and go back to sleep safe in the knowledge they must be dreaming, their urban mushbreak has never looked like this.
Not so for the tube snobs up at Padang Padang, it might have been good but this accidental kink of bathymetry can do so much better and the Rip Curl Cup was put back on hold. Here's the rub, this comp will only go when it's all-time, meaning theoretically it could never run again. Albiet an unlikely senario given that Pandang sits in the path of the Indo gravy train, just slightly recessed when compared to nearby spots like Ulus and needing a swell of consequence to get it shifting.
The comp alert state was pushed to amber before the weekend knowing this was coming but also in the knowledge it was very likely to look exactly as it did on Saturday morning.
Sometimes nature does a little better than the numbers and sometimes a little worse, but most of the time up here in Indo after a swell has travelled from so far way, the models have its guts nailed on the wall effectively enough to scare off any soothsayer.
