THERE was more than one sore head on the beach today for Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Following the 50th anniversary ball the comp was called on in pumping, perfect Bells where the favorites went to town on the overhead walls.
Sorest head of the day probably belonged to Matty Wilkinson, the permed rollerblader and crowd favourite saw his normally ferocious backhand attack desert him in the face of C.J. Hobgood's solid performance and he's out.
The perfect morning's conditions deteriorated as the day progressed leading a few to gaze over at Winkipop and wonder why they weren't running there. We later discovered it was apparently to do with council crowd safety regulations denying comps there on public holidays. Perhaps the council fancied the peak to themselves?
One man who wasn't complaining was Parko who after watching all yesterday couldn't wait to unleash his oil-slick glide on the overhead walls. Brother in arms Mick Fanning had to surf in the less than stellar later heats but both are through and have their sights locked on the finals.
The forecast still looks really good for the next few days which'll tempt the organisers to finish up in the good stuff.
