Saturday the 27th of August will live long in the memories of many individuals. The day the swell came and the day a few people conquered it.
First up the event organisers called a lay day after the swell had hit like predicted, as big and heavy as it gets out here. Officials were calling it too big to tow early on in the morning, the ocean had seemingly developed a mind of it's own. With limited boats allowed out and a code red alert in force people were paying big bucks to get them out in the channel.
"Billabong only had a few boats out there that but with a lot of waiting around and nagging I managed to get out there for an hour or so in the afternoon." Said our photog Jason.
"It cost me $100 but it was well worth it for the experience. With the likes of Koby Abberton, Ryan Hippwood, Bruce Irons and Benjamin Sanchez in the mix you knew it was going to be a good session out there. The strong currents and sheer intensity left the channel speechless."
