DAY one of the BILLABONG Pro pumped. Today's lay day was firing but no competition. Why? Because there is an abundance of surf headed towards this little reef pass and the event has the luxury of putting the guys in the water when it's more than good, this event wants to run when it's intimidatingly good.
Round one heats winners: Cory Lopez, Fredrick Patacchia, Travis Logie, Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith, Kelly Slater, Kai Otton, C.J. Hobgood, Taylor Knox, Damien Hobgood, Dusty Payne and Julian Wilson tell the story of the conditions. Overhead, hollow warping walls spinning down the reef rewarding years of Teahupoo tube time.
The weather was perfect to start competition with the waves peaking at a consistent 5ft. Everyone was getting barrelled with wins for Lopez, Fanning and Jordy. Come midday the wind picked up and went onshore for a couple of heats, bringing a lull in consistency. Owen Wright, Parko and Ricardo Santos lost out in very close battles.
The wind swung back offshore later and the waves started to hold up a lot more as Michel Bourez hit the water with attack in the mind and the crowd were right behnd him. He surfed the waved like he owned it, but a few lull in his heat meant he went down to Dusty Payne who got a couple of high scoring waves putting him through to round 3.
As the day went on, the surfing just got better and better as the final heat was worth the stay. Josh Kerr blew up dropping into monsters and scoring two high 9s, but with the likes of Julian Wilson and Adriano De Souza in the mix the show just kept rolling on. Julian made a comeback as he posted some high scores and late drops to take out the final heat of the day.
