Prior to The Endless Winter II film dropping in 2017, the team behind the project will be bringing you a series of illuminating shorts. Focussing on the origins of surfing in Europe, this historical surf documentary will untwine the hidden stories surrounding surfing's birth and development on The Old Continent.
And what better place to start than Mundaka. Lucking into a pumping swell, Mark ‘Egor’ Harris and the Endless crew are educated by everyone's favourite surfer, local hero, and naked surfing enthusiast, Kepa Acero. And the story of Mundaka? Click below for elucidation.
"After spending a lot of time in the Galápagos Islands, it was amazing to come home for a Mundaka swell which is very rare in April and to share it with family and friends was perfect," said Kepa. "It's really rare to score pumping Mundaka in April and only the second time time I have surfed Mundaka as good at this time of year!''
"The Endless Winter II is tracing the steps of the earliest surf pioneers who travelled across Europe in the 1960s and 70s," Jame Dean, the film's co-director explains. "The main road trip has taken us from Cornwall to Morocco, via France, Spain and Portugal, but we’ve also had a few other stop-overs along the way which will really show off the diversity of Europe's surf scene. Everywhere we’ve been we’ve met with many surfers who’ve told us all about the history and evolution of the sport in their countries... It’s been an awesome trip so far.
"The series is going to give a few glimpses into the journey and the upcoming film and TV series that will be released next year. This is Webisode 1 - 'The Legend of Mundaka’, which gives a short insight into the history of surfing in Mundaka, framed around a pretty epic two day swell that we scored earlier this year with Kepa Acero.
"It was an incredible couple days in a beautiful part of the world that most of the crew hadn’t visited before, so to be there when the waves were pumping (and the sun was shining) was absolutely brilliant. Mundaka is such a chilled out little town, but once the waves were on and all the guys were in the water it was crazy… hopefully we’ve managed to get enough of a sense of that across in the edit."
