The Winter Session in association with Monster Energy and Nixon is live. This competition which aims to document the European winter is officially go. Any single session filmed after October 1st, 2013, is eligible. Check out the entries so far.

When we set about creating the project we left the criteria open, hoping that surfers and filmers would pick up the creative ball and run with it. Our fear being that no-one would get this new paradigm. But we’re incredibly stoked as of now, day one, T-minus launch, that people embraced the limited criteria laid down: one single session, by one surfer, and 90 seconds or less.

Edits had to be filmed after October 1st, leaving only a small window to search out a few waves and lay down an interpretation of the brief. Thankfully the ocean played ball last week, delivering a pumping swell – if you knew which corner to head towards – and there’s plenty more swell on the way.

Epitomising the creativity on show, Gordon Fontaine (above) managed to capture a flawless Highland barrel session. And whilst not all sessions are created equal, be it 1ft, or 100ft, it’s the love which makes us rubber-up, and the diversity of available experiences which makes surfing so addictive, and this what the comp aims to explore. We’ve got Bearman tearing up some onshore surf on his longboard, a session as stoke-inducing as an 80ft drop or a thick, deep, tunnel. Tim Davies came up trumps with some French sessions from Russ Winter and Josh Piper. We’ve got Cotty’s mega wave. Andrew Mennie dressed up as a canis lupus, Lee Bartlett shredding is self-shaped Toyfactory stick and Jobe Harriss tearing up his own doorstep. The experience of watching a solo surf session is quite different to an edit composed of the best of multiple surfs, characters and locations.

Each and every surfing session is unique. By definition this makes judging tough, the criteria is subjective, the response unknown, but heck, someone’s got to win that trip to Northern Sumatra on the Jiwa. And all those Nixon Tide watches. So get documenting. Fortunately for us the shortlisted surfers themselves will form the judging panel to decide the eventual winner. In the process we’ll create a log of the cold dark months.

See all The Winter Session entries for November HERE. More will be dropping in all the time and November’s winner will be selected from a shortlist at the end of the month.
