In North Carolina, a 13 year-old girl and a 16 year-old boy both lost arms after being involved in separate shark attacks.

The two teens who remain nameless at this stage, were both attacked on the same stretch of coast just two miles apart and occurred within 90 minutes of each other. Both were swimming in waist deep water off Oak Island at the time of the attacks and were airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington on Sunday 14th.
One witness described the scenes as 'nightmarish' as other beachgoers swarmed around the girl trying to help.
Mayor Betty Wallace told Reuters the girl was attacked at 16:00 local time and lost part of her arm and also sustained a leg injury.

The boy lost his arm shortly after the attack but both patients have now been said to be in a more stable condition.

One witness described the scenes as "nightmarish" as other beachgoers swarmed around the girl trying to help applying makeshift tourniquets to stem the bleeding.

“I saw someone carry this girl [out of the water]," said Steve Bouser to the Associated Press. "People were swarming around and trying to help, it was quite terrible.”

Special patrols were launched along the coastline to search for the shark and warn people to get out of the water but it is unknown what type of shark was involved in either of these attacks.

Town officials decided the following day that the beach would not be closed and Ms Wallace stated, "I don't want everybody to think this is one of those areas where you really have to worry about shark bites. But for the foreseeable future, people have to be extra vigilant."

Our best wishes go out to both of them and their familes.
