ANTHONY Walsh doesn't do contests unless they have barrels, he's the modern gypsy, the itinerant storm chaser. Fresh back from Indo he's already repacking for a Body Glove boardshort shoot in Tahiti.
Walshy is that 2.0 surfer, eschewing the WQS drudge to carve out a niche inside the world's deepest tubes, capturing it all on a Go Pro and posting it on the web for his bread and butter. This is where he's audited for success by his sponsors.
"Put it this way" Says Walshy "The numbers I get on the internet hopefully outweigh any magazine or WQS result."
He didn't spend much time in Indo, it was a holiday with his partner Crystal and 19-month-old son Damien. "At that age quick holidays are better" he laughs. "I go to Java because it's one of the nicest places in Indo with no-one around and pumping waves."
What he neglects to mention is the reef here is shallow lava, liable to strip the bark off your body at the slightest caress. © 2013 anthonywalsh22
Being the caring, sharing type he stopped off at the Bukit on the way out to give Crystal easier reefs to surf whilst he went to town on the reef at Uluwatu.
Walshy seems to have 2012 lined up. "I'm just going to chase swells, do the Padang Padang contest, the Teahupoo trials."
So no WQS events at all in 2012?
"Probably a couple of WQS along the way so I can keep a seed to get into the Volcom Pipe at start of 2013 but no other 'QS events excite me. All I want are big barrels or long perfect waves." © 2013 anthonywalsh22
