i consider myself a bit of a hom when it comes to waves of consequence, even i think this is NOT a big wave, its overhead but thats about it..honestly these size of waves break very regularly up here..
youdig Oct 20, 2011 Rating: -1
Francois, i totally agree with you and your comments. This is not a big wave. It is a great wave and a good size, but it is not at all worthy of the title, big wave. As for the politics, all you South African political history experts, one word. Dicks. Here's some more. Educate yourselves before spouting of on a subject you have clearly learned from the school of Mandella will save us all, and if you dont think that you are clearly a racist BBC school of propaganda bollocks. And breath. Peace.

Uhhh am I reading this right? A big wave contest in Britain. Seems contradictory.
Aftermath Sep 30, 2011 Rating: 6
all those dissing the size of this wave are clearly spastics that dont surf and just sit inside all day, or playing around on swelly's in the shallows. this is a big wave and a good ride stfu about it and just surf
monteleo Jun 7, 2011 Rating: -14
ahaha! I signed up just to reply to this post. This wave is not big - it's a good size wave to surf. I'm from Yorkshire and just got back from a year surfing in Australia - This wave is NOT big in wordly terms!!!Grow some balls and if you can't ball up and take the drop then don't write a comment about something that doesn't deserve a comment. As the old legend said "If you're too scared to base jump - don't sky dive!". Come on lads - get off this site and get into it...basement junkies...represent!!! :/

The Brits on this site who are poking racey jibes at the Saffas are the shame of the nation. The Saffas are absolutely bang on about this one. I surfed this swell at a reef a few miles up the coast. It was loads of fun but I pissed myself laughing when I heard that they held a big-wave contest at Fistral on the same day. This same swell would have been double the size in Ireland and then some. I bet it was a good contest by British standards. But I agree with Francois, we make a laughing stock of ourselves by calling it a big wave contest.
Cabbage poker Nov 25, 2010 Rating: -22
Are you joking me? You held a be wave contest in England? Were the sets maxing out at 10 feet? English surfers have no balls
Humie Apr 5, 2011 Rating: 0
try telling that to andrew cotton you kook. the guy who surfed prowlers and got the cover of tons of mags and nominated for the XXL awards for it.
Francois Bouwer Feb 3, 2011 Rating: 1
Dude, don't say English surfers have no balls, there is proof on this site that many of them DO in fact have balls, more than either of us no doubt. This contest only gives England a bad name, which is what I'm trying to say. There IS big waves, and there IS people surfing those big waves. But this contest is a joke.
Gomas Jan 4, 2011 Rating: 3
You missed the party Cabbage Poker and now your standing outside shouting at the people inside.. loser.
My fuckin ovens busted!! Nov 21, 2010 Rating: 15
why don't you shove all this big wave shit up your collective ass's it does my fucking head in!! no wonder you wankers keep getting washed up/disappearing for good off of our beaches!! SURFING IS NOT ALL ABOUT THE BIGGEST WAVE RIDDEN!!! IT USED TO BE FUN UNTIL EVERY PRICK AND THIER MONKEY GOT INVOLVED

Tell me, what is more important, showing the world that England has big waves and people charging those waves, or advertisement for big companies who care nothing for the spirit of surfing? If you are telling me this was held in Summer/Autumn, then I am shocked at how far commercialism has come. Big wave contests are by their very nature winter contests, even here in SA where the waves are consistently big. If you really have to hold a contest Autumn, and the waves are 6-8ft, which is great waves BTW, don't call it a big wave contest. Either have a REAL contest, in the heart of winter, with REAL big waves, with some REAL British chargers, which I know there are plenty of, or don't have one at all. Anything under 12ft is not worthy of a big wave contest, especially if that kind of size comes through in the winter in Britian.
P-Med Mar 24, 2011 Rating: 0
Because 20ft waves only come in the middle of winter, when the lack of tourists in Cornwall would make a competition not financially viable.
Francois Bouwer Feb 3, 2011 Rating: 5
Well if there is 20ft plus waves then why didn't they rather wait for those? I never said there isn't big waves in Britain, in fact, that is the point, there IS big waves, so why the hell waste the first ever big wave comp on a 6-8ft day? I know for a fact that there is waves there in England that will make this look like a joke, which is my point. Why not wait for a REAL big day. This is some epic good waves, I'm not arguing about that, but it is not big, not even by English standards. You only proved my point by saying 20fters break there. Even if it only does it once a year, why not wait till then? The quicksilver goodwave at New Pier in durban has a waiting period of almost a year, so for a REAL big wave contest in England, why not give it the same kind of waiting period? I bet you wouldn't even need a waiting period that long to get waves twice this size!
Dicer Jan 19, 2011 Rating: 3
give it a break Francois, I've witnessed Cribbar break at 20 feet easily, alright its not consistent but as I mentioned before this particular contest was a FIRST for this area. There's also another reef near(ish) which I've yet to see ridden properly that holds 20+ beginning with Z so welcome to come over to try for yourself if you're as confident as you make out?
Francois Bouwer Jan 17, 2011 Rating: 3
I agree, it isn't all about the biggest wave. That is, unless you're holding a big wave contest. Britain has big waves, just not at this spot. Go hold a big wave contest at Porthleven, then I won't be calling the whole thing a shit excuse for a "big" wave contest. And yes I will say this wave is 8-9ft, the guy is crouched down incredibly low. Not to mention, this is the biggest wave ridden in the contest that has been posted here, there are examples of waves that cannot be bigger that 6ft. The waves are nice and beautiful, but if you call this "big wave contest" worthy, then what is this supposed to be? http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/viewPhoto.php?photoId=196430&browseSession=1eb7845a8ab11317feb9981699cc6521&photoOfTheDay BTW, note the speck in the bottom left corner, it is a surfer. THAT is a BIG wave, worthy of any big wave contest anywhere, not to mention it is breaking with MUCH more force.
Nick Hawling Dec 4, 2010 Rating: 8
I agree prefer a nice 4-5 foot I find it much more fun :)
Cornish-Surfer Oct 30, 2010 Rating: 7
i hate fistral its a bit over rated it gets good swell but personaly i dont like it to crowded
Humie Apr 5, 2011 Rating: 0
couldn't agree with you more. it is good though that its famous because it makes the tourists who think they can surf go there instead of crowding up the really good breaks up the rest of the coast.
jmh 666 Oct 21, 2010 Rating: -1
I hate most South Africans cuz they look smelly and ususally are racist (not all)... but that guy is right, this is a crap wave and whoever keeps harpin on about it bein world class you have obviously surfed nowhere good! This wave is just a peak and then shoulders off into nothing! It sucks! Thay should have had this 'big wave contest' somewhere good when it was actually big, and even then just call it a 'wave contest' cuz I have surfed England a lot and I wouldn't ever say it was BIG like Proper big wave spots are! init.
Dicer Oct 22, 2010 Rating: 7
SASPONGE Oct 20, 2010 Rating: 1
Thats about 5 foot you bunch of kooks
tgunstone Sep 13, 2010 Rating: 0
reading these posts is depressing.... assuming a South African who post a comment is white and was also a supporter of the apartheid regime is basically as bigoted as as Ter Blanche... (or however you spell it)... slagging of waves as yours are bigger is just dumb.
Francois Bouwer Apr 23, 2011 Rating: 2
Then judging a white south african or "boer", as a racist, purely because him being a "boer", is also racism. I am not racist, I don't care if you are pink, black, purple, green with yellow stripes, Xhoza, Zulu, Dutch, Boer, British, or whatever. I judge people by their opinions and actions, not there colour or race.
tjo Feb 23, 2011 Rating: 3
....by judging people based on their race....
Francois Bouwer Jan 18, 2011 Rating: 1
If they don't care about the full history then they shouldn't criticize me about stuff that the government did 20 years ago when I wasn't even born yet. And just so you know, 70% of my friends are black, so how can I be a racist?
Humie Dec 25, 2010 Rating: 0
its a surf website! not a history class, do u really think a surfer would care about what happened 100 years ago!!!!
surf vendée Sep 27, 2010 Rating: 2
If that's an 8-9ft wave then the guy surfing it must be a wee little fella , no more than 2ft tall, a proper little leprichaun . I think we can all agree that that wave is very nice. It's a shame that some people can't just get along !!!!
david puddy Sep 27, 2010 Rating: -2
i reserve the right to act blase while typing comments on the internet. don't think its a big deal buddy
Dicer Sep 27, 2010 Rating: 3
You have no grounds on which to make your daft comment Francois. This place doesn't work that often because it needs macking conditions to break clear of the rocks at the headland. This particular contest was a first at this spot. Only a few hardened surfers have surfed it properly. Chris Bertish being one of them. I wouldn't be so blasé about a spot that I know nothing about if I were you. Happy surfing...
david puddy Sep 27, 2010 Rating: -7
dude, he's a brit...we know
Francois Bouwer Sep 25, 2010 Rating: 4
I was born after apartheid ended you big idiot. How about the concentration camps in the Boer War. Lets pull that one out. Oh yea, 100 years and still no apology. And guess who started apartheid in the first place. THE BRITS! The Boers just took 40 years to decide to abolish it. And guess who is our president now that we did. A man who has no farther education than the 3rd Grade... You can ask many black people and they will say living conditions was better before 1994. I am definitely not saying that apartheid was a good thing, but I am saying that there was a very good reason the Afrikaners didn't abolish it the moment they FINALLY got to lead the country. After needing to fight the invading BRITS. The Afrikaners fought side by side with the blacks against the invading BRITS. So, if you want to pull politics into the definition of a "Big Wave", then don't expect that I do not have a little bit of knowledge of my own countries history. Asshole. Oh, and do you know what the worst part is, there is actually pictures on Magicseaweed from England that will fit the bill of: Big Wave. This is not one of them: http://cdnimages.magicseaweed.com/photoLab/143375.jpg Now that is a BIG wave. In fact, it is massive. This wave is world class and sizey, I'll give it that, but definitely not big enough to validate a "big wave contest." New Pier, which is a beach break, gets this size and bigger routinely. And then it is barrelling like nothing you have ever seen. Now, as the picture above proves, it is not England I have something against, but the fact that this is called a big wave. We have 13 year old groms that will go into your so called "big wave" contest with eyes closed.

fucking soodth affrikkans piss me off. Why don't you go and shoot some black people eh?
Francois Bouwer Jan 11, 2010 Rating: -7
Big wave contest? (Man I wish this place had smilies...) I will be surfing similar waves in a few years time, and I am very much a kook. Big wave contest, lol. You need something like 15ft (Or at least an 6-8ft slab.) for a big wave contest. This doesn't look 10ft. This looks like 8-9ft... (The guy is crouching low so it's hard to judge though, might be 10-11ft, but I doubt it.)
Vaca Jul 26, 2010 Rating: 3
No one is putting anybody down....just being realistic I think... I agree with the saffas. ...The idea of a "big wave" can be subjective, but according to world standars a wig wave is a big wave....simple as that. This is a world class wave for sure, but its not big.
Pompies Jun 19, 2010 Rating: -6
big wave? hahaha
ronald911 Apr 27, 2010 Rating: 0
The wave here averages at about 8-10ft, in Winter seasons. Last winter season, we had like 6-10ft swell for a month.. Was super mad!
localislekker Apr 18, 2010 Rating: 0
This wave DOES look 8-9 ft, my local shorey gets bigger than this....
My fuckin ovens busted!! Mar 12, 2010 Rating: -4
south africans eh? always got to put people down. Still you might as well start on us Brits now eh? because it is illegal to do it to the black people now isn't it?
charlie cheeseman Feb 11, 2010 Rating: 5
