Who named it a "Big Wave Contest"? Come on,,,This wave looks very fun but its only 6 feet, maybe 8 at the take off. A big wave contest should be held in waves a least 15 feet hawaiian. If this is a big wave contest in UK, I cant imagine what a regular contest is surfed in....nice pic anyway

You just said the reason for this bullshit they are calling a "big wave" contest. Commercialism. Fuckit, get a decent waiting period, ignore the amount of people who are going to be there, and hold a REAL contest in REAL big waves, in the WINTER. I didn't know this was in the summer, for the summer, this is pretty much huge, but hey, it's the summer. There is a lot more people in Cape Town in December, but nobody is going to be stupid enough to hold a big wave contest in December. Dungeons might be an internationally recognised big wave spot, but even there there is RARELY if ever big wave contest kind of waves in the summer. Last time big waves happened in the summer we where blaming the weird weather patterns on Global Warming. Holding a big wave contest in the summer is an insult to big wave surfing, and surfing in general. In fact, with this new knowledge, I'm surprised to see suck big waves. I wouldn't expect 6-8ft waves in offshore conditions in the summer in South Africa, let alone England.

I know where your coming from that this isn't enough for a big wave contest but think about it, they'v got to hold to comp in the summer as there is barley anyone in Newquay in the winter and this isn't that bad for summer, if it was however in the winter then you'd be getting a nice 20, maby even 30 foot swell on the north coast.

It seems the UK surfers aren't used to solid waves, judging by their comments on this forum. I agree that they may think this is a big wave, but here in good ole SA, they are a dime a dozen. We learn to surf on these beasties. And as for the surfer, try hitting the lip at the 11 o clock position next time. Nice wave though. I'd love to pull my 6'4" out on this one...

you talk like a pro, but i bet you have 7'5 funboard, and you play in the mush lol...

Big wave contest? WTF? I'm a wuss and I've surfed similar. (Maybe a foot or two short, if that is bigger than it looks, but still.) Perfectly clean and nice though, but not big. Maybe to me, but hey, like I said, I'm a wuss.
Francois Bouwer Jan 17, 2011 Rating: 0
Correction, I haven't surfed similar, I've surfed bigger, yesterday in fact. Even my grandmother said this isn't a big wave.
tgunstone Jan 21, 2010 Rating: 5
got to be said even by English standards that is not really that big. Nice though.

I'd agree relative to some other countries you can't really call this 'big' wave surfing... but who cares, how fucking awesome would it feel to be riding down the face of that?!?!

Other countries? I've seen much bigger waves from Britain here on MSW. If you want a big wave contest in Britain, you might need a 5 year waiting period from what I gather, but then wait for actual big waves. This can't be more than 8ft. That is a carver wave, not a charger wave.
chargrill Aug 12, 2009 Rating: 0
good wave definately not worthy of a big wave contest...how big are your normal waves?
karl mantle Dec 13, 2009 Rating: 2
from like 1 foot to 6 foot unless you at cribar al depends on the swell and winds
